An elegant evening to last forever

We had the true honor of attending the very special wedding of Liz and Rahoul last weekend. Liz and Rahoul booked us only two short months ago and their wedding turned out to be one of the highlights of our season. Both Liz and Rahoul lead very busy lives - Rahoul is an attorney at a large law firm here in Boston and Liz works with Governor Patrick’s office - so you can imagine what it was like to plan a wedding around their busy schedules!

Everything that evening was a complete reflection of themselves and their relationship together and it made for the most unique and personal wedding we’ve seen! From Liz’ wedding dress which not a wedding dress at all, but instead an absolutely jaw dropping evening gown to their ceremony which was completely tailored to their own personalities and cultures, we just couldn’t help but be caught up in all of the love and excitement everywhere around us! We quickly realized that our goal was to truly capture these emotions so that they would never forget exactly how everyone felt that evening. And so here’s just a quick peek at how the day unfolded before our cameras:

Liz and Rahoul decided to have both the ceremony and the reception at the gorgeous State Room in Boston. If you’ve ever been there, you know that the State Room boasts some of the best views of the city and it provided a perfect backdrop. Speaking of a perfect backdrop, Liz wanted to be sure to schedule the ceremony at precisely 4pm. Exactly 4pm - not a minute later. We actually started at 4:10, but it all worked out because guess what time the sun set last Friday? At 4:17pm. Which means that everyone enjoyed a beautiful sunset as Liz and Rahoul’s ceremony began. Gorgeous!

So Liz got ready in the bridal suite at the State Room and before the ceremony began some of her friends were dropping by to see her and give her one final toast and a hug before her walk down the aisle. Then… just minutes before the ceremony began, everyone left to take their seats and Liz was left with a few quiet moments to herself. This resulted in one of my favorite images from their wedding. This was literally two minutes before Liz walked down the aisle with her dad. (Check the clock!) Can you imagine all of the excitement and nervous energy that Liz was feeling right at this very moment?
.

.

By the way, you can also see Liz’ amazing dress that I just can’t get enough of. This is definitely my all time favorite dress and Liz wore it so perfectly - it was truly breathtaking! Now here, just moments later, Liz and her dad are waiting for their cue to walk down the aisle together.
.

.

Their ceremony was an amazing experience and so unique to Liz and Rahoul as it included traditions that were important to both of them. Traditions such as jumping the broom as well as hindu traditions such as exchanging garlands and tying the knot. It must be so amazing for them to know that no one will ever have a ceremony like theirs - it was a true reflection of themselves! After the ceremony we had a little bit of time to sneak away with Liz and Rahoul and their families as well:

.

.

I absolutely love this emotional moment between Liz and Rahoul’s mother while Rahoul and Liz’ dad look on in the background…

.

Next I asked Rene to do something special for all the girls who frequent our blog. I needed him to pay homage to Liz’ impeccable taste in shoes and to her gorgeous Manolo Blahnik’s:

.

And then there’s the entire reception to talk about! It was held in the same room as the ceremony but there was such a complete transformation, no one would ever be able to recognize it! Between the mouth watering dinner stations, their signature apple martini drinks (complete with an apple wedge) and the fantastic music, it was a perfect evening. And in case there’s any question about just how much fun everyone had, we thought we’d share a few fun candids from the evening. What I love most about this next image is that Rahoul is just dancing it up like you wouldn’t believe and Liz just can’t contain herself. I just break out into giggles every time I see how hard she’s laughing and how much fun their having here!!

.

And there was some unexpected dipping, too!

.

The thing is, Liz and Rahoul wanted to create an evening for their closest family and friends that would be special and completely memorable. They accomplished that and so much more! We know that Liz and Rahoul are going to accomplish so many wonderful things in their lives together and we want to be the first ones to call it here! Thank you again, guys, for allowing us to capture such an amazing and unforgettable day!

Elyse and Will - A crisp fall afternoon in the city

We are so excited about Elyse and Will’s summer wedding in Boston next June! But we were even more excited about getting together with them last weekend for their engagement session. That’s because it was the first time we were going to meet them! It probably seems pretty obvious that we meet all of our couples before the book us, but sometimes our couples don’t actually live in Boston even though they’ll be getting married here. That’s exactly what happened with Elyse and Will! They’re currently in college and so Elyse’s mom and dad came in to meet us after conferring with Elyse and Will to find out exactly what they were interested in. Well, we completely fell in love with Elyse’s parents. We were actually kind of wishing they’d get re-married or renew their vows because we knew they’d be so much fun!

After confirming their plans to visit family here in Boston over the holiday weekend, Elyse and Will also thought it would be the perfect weekend to finally meet us as well! So we completely took advantage of the time that we had together and headed out into the cool fall afternoon for a great engagement session with them! We probably walked a total distance of 3 blocks from Elyse’s parents house but that was all we needed. We could have photographed these guys in a brown cardboard box and they would have had fun with it so we couldn’t go wrong! Here are some of our favorites!

First one, of the handsome groom-to-be, Will. And this was directly inspired from the cover of this month’s Men’s Vogue. No kidding!

.

Meanwhile, Elyse and I were having our own fun in the sun…

.

But seeing as this is an engagement session, here are a few photos when they were together as well…

We walked past this very cool doorway and Rene and I both were dying to use it. We had very different visions of what we saw there, and I’m glad because I love both of our ideas! First I had a little fun with all of the crazy shadows everywhere:

.

And Rene had something a little more romantic in mind… (This is why I love him… ;))

.

.

Elyse has the most adorable little dimples when she smiles. See? I love them!

.

And we couldn’t believe how many leaves were still on the trees and on the ground, so we knew we’d have to take advantage of them while we could. Our only instructions here were to stop and kiss whenever they felt like it. Now THIS is what I’m talking about! You can never go wrong with a kiss like this!

.
Elyse and Will are now back home but we’re counting the days until they come back again. And June will be here before you know it and you’ll all get to read about their wedding right here! I promise you that the details at their wedding are going to be AMAZING. Like nothing that we’ve seen so far, so we’re very excited! (Now if only we didn’t all have to wait 7 months!!)

Marcia and Eric let their personalities shine!

When you meet Marcia and Eric, you immediately realize that this is not a couple who is going to do what everyone else does “just because.” Especially not for something as important as their wedding day! Yes, it definitely involved a lot more planning and lot more decision making but we can definitely say without question that it was completely worth it!! To begin, Marcia and Eric had their ceremony and their reception at an incredibly unique venue - beautiful Glen Magna Farms in Danvers, MA.

Their ceremony was held on the main staircase in the grand foyer area. Eric and Marcia exchanged vows right on the center landing while their family and friends gathered on both the first and second floors to watch it all unfold. It was so beautifully intimate and perfect! But remember, even though Glen Magna Farms is a wonderfully unique location, that wasn’t enough. They wanted to personalize their wedding so that everyone would feel as though they were an integral part of the wedding. And did they ever accomplish that!! Eric’s mom played the piano as all of the guests arrived and then Eric’s sister played the flute during the ceremony! Eric’s brother in law performed the ceremony. Their gorgeous vintage cake topper? It was Marcia’s grandmother’s cake topper! It was just amazing to see the contributions from all of the people that are closest to them. And dinner? So incredibly scrumptious! They featured stations throughout the estate, but these were not your every day wedding dinner stations. Their stations included a tapas and paella station; a sushi station; an espresso and cappuccino bar and so much more!

But I know, I know…everyone wants to see actual photos from the wedding! Well, we’re never one to disappoint so here is a quick sneak peek at some of our favorites! As usual, I was with the girls as they got ready and Rene found Eric and his groomsmen to capture some of those last minute preparations. Eric’s best man getting that tie just perfect:

.

And the shoes are a key accessory to any wedding outfit, of course:

.

Meanwhile in the room next door, Marcia and I were having our own fun. You know what’s funny about your wedding day? Everything seems to go by so quickly throughout the day. Except for those last 10 minutes just before you walk down the aisle. Those 10 minutes seems to go on forever! So to keep ourselves calm and occupied, I completely took advantage of the gorgeous Marcia so I could show off her gorgeous eyes:

.

.

And can’t you just FEEL the excitement here just minutes before the ceremony began…

.

One thing that we absolutely loved about these guys was that Marcia and Eric were completely determined to sneak away for plenty of time for portraits of just the two of them. They wanted to be sure that we were able to try anything and everything we could think of and that we had enough time to get it all done. Wow, did we ever have a phenomenal session!!! We actually broke it up into two smaller sessions. One right after the ceremony, and then Marcia and Eric rejoined their cocktail hour so they could mingle with their guests. They extended their cocktail hour for a total of 90 minutes so that they could be sure to see everyone (and enjoy some of those great appetizers!). Then they set aside some more time to sneak away with us again during dinner. I can’t even tell you how much Rene and I were on a “high” after we were all done. We all just had so much fun together and it was so wonderful for Marcia and Eric to have some alone time, too, to just soak it all in. And because we had two mini-sessions with them, we were able to get so many incredible portraits of them! It was completely impossible to pick out some favorites but here we go! This one was taken right on the main staircase in the grand foyer:
.

.

Now here’s an interesting little side fact about Glen Magna Farms. The outdoor property there is absolutely breathtaking. Everywhere you turn there is something different to play with. There are gorgeous manicured gardens; old stone columns with ivy growing up the side; gorgeous knotty trees everywhere. When we visited the property with Marcia and Eric, we couldn’t even begin to fathom how many different elements we’d have to work with. But… mother nature sometimes likes to make you think outside the box. On Marcia and Eric’s wedding day, we were treated to our first Nor’easter here in New England. We experienced a driving rain and stiff wind all afternoon and evening. So were we disappointed? Not even a little! I’m not kidding. The best part was that Marcia and Eric didn’t even blink - they completely trusted us. We had this gorgeous estate to work with and there were more cozy nooks and fun architectural elements than we knew what do with! For example… one of my absolutely favorite images from the evening is this one. Can you guess where it was taken?

.

I’m just melting looking at the photo again. I love this one so much. No ideas on where we were? (Our previous couples can’t answer this one since they already know how we operate!) We were actually in an upstairs restroom. We picked it because it was a small room that we could have to ourselves and because the walls and mirrors in that room let us get creative with some lighting. We shut the door, had Marcia and Eric get cozy and used our video lights to help create the mood. After that, the the rest of the evening was spent having as much fun as possible dancing and laughing and even finding some old friends to share some cigars with outside:

.

We are so incredibly excited for Marcia and Eric to see the rest of their wedding photos now that their website is ready! Thank you so much for letting us be there with you!!

A very special and personal project

I’d like everyone to meet one of the most adorable and vivacious little boys I’ve ever had the honor to photograph. This is Raffi and I just met him for the first time last week when we got together for a fantastic photo session that was all about him! I met Raffi because I recently volunteered to help out a very special organization here in Massachusetts. MARE is the Massachusetts Adoption Resource Exchange and is probably best known for their Heart Gallery. The Heart Gallery is a wonderful exhibit of children who are awaiting adoption right here in Massachusetts. The goal of the Heart Gallery is raise awareness about the many wonderful children who are looking for a family to call their own. The exhibit actually travels across the state all year long and there’s also a permanent gallery in every Jordan’s Furniture store. It was actually at the Jordan’s Furniture in Reading where Rene and I first walked through the Heart Gallery last summer and when I first vowed to volunteer as a Heart Gallery photographer.

I knew that I wanted to do anything I possibly could to help these fantastic kids find a home so I asked MARE to put me to work doing whatever it is that they needed. And this was how I got to meet Raffi! We met up right after school one day last week and I experienced an instant role reversal for the first time in my career. Instead of ME trying to make Raffi feel comfortable and relaxed, he did all the work! As soon as I arrived he let me meet his beloved pets - an adorable little puppy and also his gorgeous little bird. He also took me on a tour around the yard and was able to point out all of the great backgrounds that he had already scoped out for me. I’m telling you, I think I’ve found my next assistant! But beyond that, I was so completely blown away by how friendly and fun Raffi is. He’s the perfect conversationalist - he’s the one that would show up in a room and within 5 minutes get everyone talking to each other even if they had never met before. It was great! And needless to say it made for a very fun photo session!! There are so many great images of him but here are a couple of our favorites including some that feature Raffi’s pet bird!

.

.

.

Don’t you just love those dimples??? He has the best little laugh and when his dimples appear with it you just can’t help to smile right back at him!

.

So I just want to take a second to ask everyone to please keep an eye out for the Heart Gallery when it makes a visit to a town near you soon. Or even better, take just a moment to visit the permanent Heart Gallery in any Jordan’s Furniture store. You’ll see Raffi’s photo there beginning in February and you’ll also get to see all of the other gorgeous kids just waiting for a family of their own. If you’re interested in more information about the Heart Gallery or about MARE just click on their website here: http://www.mareinc.org/ or you can just get in touch with Rene and I and we’d be happy to help with more information as well!

Lauren and Glenn -

It finally happened! Lauren and Glenn officially tied the knot a couple of weeks ago! We’ve been waiting for a long time for their wedding to arrive. You might actually recognize Lauren and Glenn from their engagement session in Salem just a couple of months ago which you can see here.

Their engagement session really did a good job of putting us on pins and needles waiting for their wedding day to arrive. We had so much fun and the reality of it is that we just love these guys to pieces. Both Lauren and Glenn have the BEST sense of humor and we just kept each other laughing all day long. They were both so incredibly calm leading right up to the ceremony. No crazy last minute nerves, nothing too stressful - it was all very zen-like! So - as we usually do - Rene and I split up before the wedding and in addition to some fun getting ready photos we were able to sneak in a few portraits of both Lauren and Glenn. First here’s one of mine of the incredibly gorgeous Lauren:

.
You know what blows me away all the time? We’ve known Lauren and Glenn for a while now and every single time I see her eyes, I just completely melt. Aren’t they truly breathtaking? She must be so sick of hearing me say that because I can’t resist saying it every time I see her, too. We took this portrait literally moments before we ran out the door to go to the church. And it was actually taken right in her parents’ newly renovated kitchen. All we needed was a little stool for Lauren to sit on and a chair for me to stand on and Lauren did the rest with those stop-traffic eyes.

Meanwhile, all of the guys and Rene had arrived at the church and Rene took this great portrait of the ever suave Glenn using nothing more than the light that pouring in from one of the front doors:

.

Their ceremony was held in Swampscott and then we all made our way to the beautiful Seaport Hotel in Boston for an incredible reception for their 300 guests! The one thing I have to mention are all of the details that Lauren and Glenn thought of. From the incredibly beautiful monogrammed aisle runner at the church, to the the rock star bus (literally!) for their wedding party, to the dessert buffet at the reception, there were tiny little personal touches everywhere you looked that day. They overlooked nothing and it made it so much fun for their guests to find all of the little treats all day long. I just can’t figure out how they were able to do it all!!

Once we got to the Seaport we took some time out for some photos of their families and their wedding party. Fun little side story about their wedding party. We photographed the wedding of one Glenn’s groomsmen last years (Hi Pete and Heather - and happy anniversary!!). We’re also photographing one of Lauren’s bridesmaid’s wedding next year (Hi Michelle and Scott!!) and also in attendance at their wedding was Kate and Tim - another couple we also recently photographed! We’re beginning to suspect that Kate and Tim are serious groupies, though, because they’ve popped up at quite a few of our weddings since their own!! :) But I have say, that’s a lot of Tirado couples at one wedding! It definitely made for an incredibly fun evening!

But I digress! The rain actually was playing games with us all day and had been falling off and on throughout the entire afternoon. So we had a lot of fun playing “dodge the raindrops” as we took photos out in the garden at the Seaport Hotel. When we couldn’t be in the garden, we’d sneak inside for a few fun images and then head back out again! When we finally had a few moments alone with Lauren and Glenn we did the same exact thing! We were able to so many great images outside and then we even were trapped under an overhang for a while as the rain came pouring down which turned into a great opportunity to take some cool photos there with the wet cityscape behind them! It was so hard to pick out favorites for the blog but here’s one I knew I would love the second we took it!

.

Then we headed inside to enjoy the fantastic reception which was NONSTOP fun all evening long. Their band, Soho, is definitely one of our favorite bands ever and they rocked it all night long. We were blown away by how great they were. And Lauren and Glenn and all of their guests definitely enjoyed every single minute of it!!

.

After spending their honeymoon in beautiful Miami and Aruba (and now that we’ve drooled over all of their photos that they’ve already shared!) we finally have Lauren and Glenn’s entire gallery ready and we just can’t wait for them to see it!

Thank you both a million times for allowing us to be there with you. Not only was it everything we thought it would be, we feel like we walked away with so much more after getting to know you both. So thank you so much again and we can’t wait to see you soon!!

More important updates!

So here I am writing to you LIVE from our new studio! Okay, so as I look around at the piles and piles of boxes, desks askew everywhere and bare empty spaces where the furniture will go, even I have to admit that it doesn’t look like much right at this moment. But we are officially here! We’re waiting on some deliveries and as soon as everything is in place we’ll be sure to post some pictures for everyone!

In the meantime, the next step is to bring our telephone and fax line over here. In order to do that, our studio telephone number (978-536-5195) will not work for a couple of days. If anyone needs to get in touch with us you should do so via email at info@tiradophotography.com as we’ll be checking our email all day long. The phone lines will likely be down on Thursday and Friday but will be fully operational again by Saturday morning!

If you have any questions, just be sure to ask! And thanks so much for everyone’s patience while we make this crazy, crazy transition! We promise it will all be worth it when it’s done!!
