A Boston engagement session

So even though Deena and Kris haven’t picked a wedding date just yet, we’ve already gotten together for a fabulous engagement session with them! As a matter of fact, they were engaged on June 28th and by June 29th we had already heard the great news and had set up an engagement session for them!

I should probably back up our story just a bit… we first meet Deena and Kris when Deena was a bridesmaid in Nicole and Matt’s wedding last summer. We really hit it off with Deena that day and just stayed in touch with each other after the wedding. Deena and I kept joking around about whether anyone would think it odd if she booked a photographer for her wedding before she was even engaged. (We both agreed that would be totally acceptable, by the way! :) )

Anyways, because we had been chatting for so long, we were so excited to hear the news when they got engaged just a few weeks ago! Kris completely surprised Deena by asking her to marry him while they were on a hike in Maine. They go hiking a lot (with their adorable dog) and so Kris really picked the perfect location to propose. Unfortunately, the fog and clouds were SO thick that day, that you literally couldn’t see more than 10 feet in front of you. You can just imagine the gorgeous backdrop at the summit just after Kris proposed, but those clouds and fog completely had them surrounded! What makes this an even better story, though, was that a stranger happened to walk by just after they got engaged and offered to take a picture with their camera. They soon found out that this man had proposed to his wife 10 years earlier at the same exact location. It was just perfect!

Although it was really cloudy and foggy the day that Kris proposed, there was nothing but bright sun and beautiful blue sky on the day of their engagement session. Since they live in historic Beacon Hill, Kris and Deena asked if we could meet them on the Esplanade in Boston and then walk around their neighborhood for their session. We really couldn’t have imagined a better location for them. And so here are some of our favorites from that afternoon…

Kris looking every bit as cool as he is in real life on a dock by the Charles River…

Kris’ mom actually made a beautiful silk dress for Deena just for their engagement session. It’s absolutely stunning and fit Deena so perfectly (there’s just nothing like a custom tailored dress…)

A little fun with Shadows and some bold colors…

And you know how much we love our alley ways - and the alleys in Beacon Hill are of course every bit as beautiful as the neighborhood itself. We found this gorgeous ivy covered wall in one and couldn’t resist having some fun…

We had SUCH an amazing time with these guys and can’t wait to for their wedding! Right now the plan is for a 2010 wedding, but you’ll definitely see this couple before then. They’ll be making their television debut very soon when they’re featured on a show on HGTV - filming begins in just a couple of weeks! We’re super excited for them and the producers will even be using a few of the images from their engagement session on the show! Stay tuned….

Megan and Jeff - in front of our cameras again!

Megan and Jeff are so much fun to photograph! And I get the impression that they might really have fun with it, too - they’ve been in front of our cameras three times in just the past year!

We first met them when Megan was a bridesmaid in Margaret and Tim’s stunning wedding last July. Then when Megan and Jeff asked us to photograph their own upcoming wedding we set up a date for their own engagement session and got to photograph them again all on their own. So needless to say, when their wedding day finally arrived, we all knew the kind of fun we were in for and we were all very excited about it!

Rene and I each spent some time with Megan and Jeff early in the afternoon and then we all met up for their beautiful ceremony at St. Columbkille Church in Brighton. Their reception was at the very cool and very urban Seaport World Trade Center in Boston. Their wedding party was a ton of fun and I’m sure none of us will forget the mad scramble while we were taking photos outside when the large bolts of lightning lit up the background. Fun times and definitely some great memories!

So Megan and Jeff are still away enjoying their very extended and very well deserved honeymoon, but we wanted to post some of our favorites from the wedding while we wait for their return to Boston!

One of my favorite moments just as the ceremony was starting when was when the two beautiful flowergirls (Megan’s nieces) received some last minute encouragement from their mom just before walking down the aisle…

And our favorite part of each wedding is the quiet time that we get to spend with each couple. This is when we really have fun. The rain began just as the cocktail hour was ending, so Megan, Jeff and Rene found shelter just under the front entrance at the World Trade Center and took advantage of some beautiful lighting all at the same time…

Later in the evening, Megan and Jeff wanted to sneak away with us for a few minutes again so we could have another mini-session with them after the sun had set. We are so happy that we did because these are some of our favorite images that really show off this gorgeous couple. Our goal was to find some unique elements at the hotel that may not normally be used for photographs so that we could give Megan and Jeff something a little different.

We found an outdoor balcony overlooking the city skyline and the entire balcony was lit with just a lantern-like lamp that was mounted to a wall. The rivets on the wall behind Jeff provided a cool texture and we used that single light to create some dramatic lighting. Then Jeff gave us his best Hollywood mystery man look and he looks absolutely fabulous…

We then headed inside to the very standard and not so interesting “photo room.” But it did have some great blank walls. So we turned all of the lights off, closed the doors and used some video light to create a stunning portrait of Megan:

It was truly a night that no one will ever forget! Megan and Jeff are one of those couples that will do anything for their family and friends and as a result have the incredible support of so many wonderful people. It was so special for us to be there with them!
